Scandal! Myth! Modernism! The association of the XI in Berlin

On February 5, 1892, eleven painters in Berlin founded an association “to hold art exhibitions.” This association was called the Vereinigung der XI, or the Association of the XI. With more than 100 exhibits, “Scandal! Myth! Modernism! The Association of the XI in Berlin” presents the history of this pioneering organisation of Berlin artists for the very first time. It reconstructs parts of the historical exhibitions held by the group, introduces the artists involved and presents the polemical response they met with in the press of the day.

Meet the press

What climate change means for our health

NDR and Arte TV presenter Thomas Kausch engages in a compelling discussion with leading experts about various aspects of climate change, the consequences for our health and the health-related policy decisions required to address the issue.

Periods of extremely hot weather in summer 2018 proved that human health is not always able to cope with such climatic extremes. According to the Robert Koch Institute, nearly 500 people died in Berlin alone as a result of the high temperatures last year. This year, we are again experiencing extreme weather. More and more people regionally and in a global context are being exposed to these damaging environmental impacts.

There will also be analysis of the often-neglected effects on people living in sub-Saharan Africa. Rising ambient temperatures are threatening the health of people in that region in particular, limiting their ability to work and their productivity, which is ultimately driving the large numbers of economic migrants and people fleeing Africa for Europe to avoid the harsh climate.

Madame Dubarry

This film enjoyed a glittering premiere 100 years ago in Berlin Charlottenburg. The Ufa Palast am Zoo cinema opened its doors for the first time with a fanfare on September 18, 1919 by showing "Madame Dubarry". This was the age of the first large cinemas, and going to the cinema was to become a fixture in many people's lives. Berlin was a movie-goer's European mecca, with almost 150 established cinemas in the city. Zoo Palast, itself part of the history of cinema, and the Metropolis Orchestra Berlin pay homage to that great era and present to you Ernst Lubitsch's unique silent movie, exactly 100 years to the day of the premiere. "Madame Dubarry" will of course be accompanied live, making this screening a very special event indeed.

Members of the  International Club Berlin can obtain admission tickets for a special price of 29 € per person. Please apply for tickets directly via the cinema website here: Website des Zoopalasts  and click on International Club Berlin.

We hope you will enjoy this historic, unique film screening very much.

Pablo Picasso x Thomas Scheibitz – Guided Tour

It would be hard to find another contemporary artist who works in such a complex manner, using all sorts of components and references taken from everyday life and the pool of art history, as does Thomas Scheibitz (born in 1968 in Radeberg near Dresden). His dense, often brilliantly colourful paintings and his hazy, often puristically conceived sculptures can be seen as freely designed, real-life installations. They emerge as complex image or object storage units encapsulating visual living culture, which the artist has strongly compressed. The influence of  Pablo Picasso and cubism is self-evident. "Of all the great 20th-century isms," explains Scheibitz, "cubism has remained the most radical, the most formative."

Through this exhibition, the Museum Berggruen, which is dedicated to Picasso's art and his era, creates a link from the classical modern movement to contemporary art. Some 45 works will demonstrate that while Picasso and Scheibitz are not linked by the same motives, they have a very similar approach to art. Both artists view their work as an open process that constantly leads to  new variants and updating of extant solutions. Nothing here remains static. Nevertheless, both artists abide by the fundamental ideal of image and sculpture.
