The diverse University
The Diverse University: A Threat to Democracy or a Guardian of the Common Good?
The role of universities in democratic societies has undergone significant change in recent years. Today, they are expected not only to excel in global research and prepare an increasingly diverse student body for the challenges of the coming decades through the effective use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, but also to address complex issues surrounding freedom of speech and academic expression.
Drawing on his many years of experience as a university president, Professor Oliver Günther explores these developments and presents concrete ideas for the future of the public university as an institution, highlighting its role in strengthening democracy, fostering innovation, and serving the common good.

Germany meets ASEAN in Berlin
It is our great pleasure to invite you, at the very beginning of September, to our dialogue event “Germany meets ASEAN in Berlin,” which we are hosting jointly with the embassies of the ASEAN Member States in the Federal Republic of Germany and the distinguished International Club Berlin on 2 September.
What region of the world could be a more natural partner for Europe than the community of nations in Southeast Asia, representing more than 700 million potential partners?
With the accession of Timor-Leste to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Europe is presented with a network of now 11 dynamic, rapidly growing and populous countries, characterized by a remarkably young population, cultural diversity and an increasingly important common market. The “common economic space” agreed upon in 2009, inspired in part by the European model, serves as a reference point for many shared ambitions, while also presenting significant challenges.
Rising expectations for shared progress are never fulfilled automatically. They require sustained commitment, initiative and determination—conditions that have become no easier to meet in the face of growing global pressures and challenges.
In February, the Federal Republic of Germany had the honour of welcoming ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn (Cambodia) to Berlin. His visit gave fresh impetus to a number of new ideas and projects aimed at further strengthening relations between Germany and ASEAN.
On 2 September, the Ambassadors of the ASEAN Member States will be our guests and will share their perspectives on current developments and key issues facing the region and its relations with Europe and Germany.
